AUDACIOUS, ONE-NIGHT-ONLY PRESENTATIONS OF SURPRISING MUSICAL COLLABORATIONS
“No series has better instincts in fomenting post-genre alchemy than the Ecstatic Music Festival.” (Steve Smith, The New Yorker)
Get up close and personal with trailblazing artists stretching their wings and diving into collaborations that take their work in bold new directions. The only music festival that exclusively presents new work resulting from collaborations, the EMF has been hailed as “a who’s who of the music scene” (WQXR) and “audacious combinations and post-genre hybrids” (The New Yorker).
Bang on a Can’s People’s Commissioning Fund (PCF) is a radical partnership between artists and audiences to commission works from adventurous composers. This year’s People’s Commissions go to four outstanding composers with four very different musical worldviews. The common denominator is musical fearlessness. Nicole Lizée is the mad scientist, a true original, inspired by the sounds of gadgets and soundtracks and turntables and anything that makes noise; Trevor Weston‘s music creates aural universes and logical puzzles drawn from his ever-fertile imagination; Josué Collado Fregoso loves tight hockets and highly syncopated percussive soundscapes with twists and turns and unexpected surprises. And words cannot describe the omnivorous creativity of one of music’s great visionaries – Henry Threadgill – who manages to defy gravity every time he writes and plays.
