A Split-Bill Evening Curated by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar
Marguerite Hemmings
we free
Marguerite Hemmings makes dances at the intersection of various emerging contemporary street styles across the African Diaspora. Her new solo work we free gives a glimpse into the experimentation, play, unapologetic self-aggrandizement, and aggressive practice of freedom that her millennial generation embodies.
Katrina Reid
Don’t move too slow through the broken glass
Performing artist and writer Katrina Reid describes her dance Don’t move too slow through the broken glass as “a kinetic brew conjured from an ancestral cauldron.” Interested in the burden of achieving power, Reid uses her own texts inspired by lyrics from bluegrass, R&B, and house music to weave a personal “power story.” Combined with DIY objects, the work encourages both performer and audience to embody the tenacious spirit Reid witnesses daily throughout New York City.
