Arts Partner: Kaufman Music Center

Hailed as “the alt-classical world’s main showcase” (The New York Times) and “a kind of heaven for show-goers in search of the ever-elusive, one-of-a-kind live music experience” (The Village Voice), Kaufman Music Center’s Ecstatic Music Festival returns for its sixth year, bringing together composers and performers from different musical genres or scenes for collaborations leading to performances that are adventurous and utterly unique.

Sonic Youth founding member Lee Ranaldo and the experimental electric guitar quartet Dither perform “Hurricane Transcriptions,” a series of songs bridged with instrumental pieces. Inspired by Hurricane Sandy, the songs include transcriptions of recordings made by Ranaldo in NYC during the storm. “The wind was coming off, through and around all the tall buildings and making the most amazing sounds,” says Ranaldo. “Overlapping drones, swirling and repetitive, tonal clusters and harmonies, close and dissonant, but also at times clearly consonant chords with clear root, third and fifth. The city became a massive Aeolian wind harp!”
