Arts Partner: French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF)

Join us for a very special evening of French and American wartime songs performed by the nationally acclaimed Skylark Vocal Ensemble.

Francis Poulenc’s Figure Humaine is one of the greatest works ever composed for an unaccompanied choir. Inspired by the resistance poems of the surrealist Paul Éluard, Poulenc secretly wrote and rehearsed the piece in 1943 in occupied France.

Clear Voices in the Dark juxtaposes the profound technical difficulty of Figure Humaine with the universal simplicity of hymns from the American Civil War. Performed together, these anthems are a stunning exploration of the realities of war and the power of music to ward off despair during humanity’s darkest hours.
