Hérodiade has been absent from the New York City stage since 1995, and has never been performed by The Metropolitan Opera. With its presentation of this work, New Amsterdam Opera continues its commitment to NYC audiences to offer live performances of the underperformed works of the great composers.
Massenet’s masterful use of French lyricism in this opera expresses a fascinating take on the story of Salome and John the Baptist – very different from the more frequently performed Strauss version that usually comes to mind. Massenet did not, however, neglect the elements of obsession, political rivalry, and all-consuming vengeance that form the basis of this ancient tale. Several of the arias from Hérodiade are concert and recital favorites and attest to the beauty of this glorious work. These include Salomé’s “Il est doux, il est bon” and Hérode’s “Vision fugitive.”
Artistic Director Keith Chambers will conduct the New Amsterdam Opera Orchestra and Chorus and the exciting cast, which includes “formidable” mezzo-soprano Janara Kellerman (Hérodiade), “captivating” soprano Marcy Stonikas (Salomé), “striking” tenor Errin Duane Brooks (Jean), “thrilling” baritone Jason Duika (Hérode), “mellifluous” bass-baritone Isaiah Musik-Ayala (Phanuel), in-demand young baritone Charles Eaton (Vitellius), and rising young soprano Brooklyn Snow (Jeune Babylonienne).
