Using music and dance, Paul Cosma-Cimpoieru fervently explores a Romanian immigrant’s experiences in the Big Apple. From the subways, bodegas, tourists, Uptown, Downtown, he reveals through this interpretive dance work what it feels like to wake up in the city that never sleeps and strive to be a part of it.
Paul Cosma-Cimpoieru (dancer, choreographer and actor), with the charisma, moves and stamina reminiscent of Baryshnikov, has catapulted to a premier stage in Romanian dance theater, yet his innovation and gift for storytelling places him in a class by himself. He launched his dance career in 2004 in Bucharest with the Compania de Teatru “Passe-Partout” lead by the great Dan Puric. Since then, he has toured the globe and danced with prestigious companies such as the Gigi Caciuleanu Dance Company, Bulandra Theater (Bucharest), National Centre of Dance (Bucharest) and National Theatre of Bucharest. Recently, he created the award-winning dance theater work “Two of Us” with Ana Pepine that has been presented around the world including Belgrade, New York, Russia and India. In addition to his successful career in dance, he has produced and appeared in several short films and documentaries including “Life & Death of Harry Houdini” (2014) and The Man and the Fish” (2013). Currently, he is in New York City completing an internship at the acclaimed Actor’s Studio and developing new works.
This program is produced by Romanian Cultural Institute and Creative Ammo Inc./Downtown Urban Theater Festival and supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and City Council Member Daniel Garodnick.
