Tar Baby is not a typical play. It is a creative one woman show performed by Desiree Burch. The performance includes carnival games to elaborately explain the history of race through her perspective. Surprisingly the show is hilarious and very interactive. Audience members participate in games on stage and became co-actors for minutes at a time. Nevertheless the show remains genuine and true to the topic of shedding light to the history of race.
The performance depicts the beginning of the slave trade to present. Through games, interactive stories, and activities, Burch portrays the history of African-Americans. Many can agree that numerous topics of conversation brought up in the piece were very relevant and relatable. While still being humorous she proved a point that race is still an issue in this country. Although it is better than the Jim Crow era, we still live in a world were race is a factor and stereotypes have a powerful influence on our choice of words or actions.
I particularly enjoyed that Burch was able to pull her own life experiences into this play to make it her own. Overall, this is a great show. Anyone in the audience is bound to have a good time while still gaining a powerful message.
