Over forty years ago, a little musical about a young man trying to find meaning in his life premiered to an astounded audience in New York. The musical, Pippin, garnered an impressive five Tony Awards and soon became the talk of The Big Apple. With music by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked,Godspell,Children of Eden), this musical boasts classic scenes of suspense and wonder.

Fast forward forty years, the first Broadway revival dazzles and will open officially in less than 2 weeks! The newly imagined musical is inspired by circuses and Cirque du Soleil- type acrobatics. The show stars Matthew James Thomas (Spider-Man) and Patina Miller (Sister Act) who both had outstanding presence. Thomas’ portrayal of Pippin was spot-on and his vocals were crisp and perfect. Patina had great audience interactions and a stellar voice as well.

The show also boasts Terrence Manns (Addams Family, Beauty and the Beast) as Pippin’s dad, and Andrea Martin as Pippin’s Grandma. Martin’s portrayal of Berthe earned her a two minute clapping frenzy after her crowd pleaser spectacular number, “No time at all.” Another stand-out was Rachel Bay Jones as her heartfelt take on Pippin’s love, Catherine.

Everything about this revival is new. The creative symmetric scenery was newly imagined, down to even the silks and aerialists sewn into this show. The audience clearly was impressed by this new take on the breathtaking show stopper after a five- minute standing ovation at the conclusion of the show. The Tony’s better watch out because Pippin is a clear contender for the recipient of The Best Revival award.

Not only was the ensemble stellar and elegant, the choreography was classic Bob Fosse with a swirl of 21st century -styled dancing woven into the show. With new beginnings came a new ending that I will leave a secret for you to see for yourself. A child actor was even added into this new 2013 adaptation.

Pippin is currently playing at the Music Box Theatre on 45th Street in New York City.
