Rouse’s haunting score, both lyrically mournful and ragingly grotesque, provides an aural metaphor for tragedy in this full-company World Premiere. In a rare solo appearance, Doug Varone performsThe Fabulist , (NYC Premiere) commissioned by American Dance Festival in 2014 to critical acclaim: “Something, probably honesty, makes his movement powerfully touching – you feel like he is telling you secrets in the dark. Do not miss this solo.”(The Five Points Star). Also on the program is a major revival of Varone’s celebratedCastles (2004). Set to Prokofiev’s sweeping Waltz Suite, it examines and debunks fairytale imagery, at times playful and serious.
