Arts Partner: Kaufman Music Center

Hailed as “the alt-classical world’s main showcase” (The New York Times) and “a kind of heaven for show-goers in search of the ever-elusive, one-of-a-kind live music experience” (The Village Voice), Kaufman Music Center’s Ecstatic Music Festival returns for its sixth year, bringing together composers and performers from different musical genres or scenes for collaborations leading to performances that are adventurous and utterly unique.

Extra Life and Zs founding member Charlie Looker and the “daring and ferocious” (Chicago Reader) Mivos Quartet join composer/countertenor M. Lamar for the premiere of Lamar’s “Surveillance Punishment and the Black Psyche,” a song cycle with art direction by Sabin Calvert. M. Lamar crafts sprawling narratives of radical racial and sexual becoming with songs the Ottawa Citizen calls “a cross stylistically between operatic excess, old-fashioned Negro spirituals and demonic possession.” The program also includes new work by Looker, including arrangements of music by his bands Extra Life, Seaven Teares and Psalm Zero.
