Put on your best dancing shoes and make sure you know the words to all your favorite oldies, because at Amateur Night, you’ll need them!
Known all over the world for it’s sensational music and legendary talents, Amateur Night takes place in the depths of Harlem at the Apollo Theater. Music legends such as Michael Jackson, the Temptations, and James Brown all got their start on that distinguished stage. And every Wednesday night today’s up and coming stars are trying to get their start there too.
Upon entering the Apollo, drop your problems at the door because this is a night filled with exceptional music, fantastic comedy, and some amazing and not so amazing performers. The night starts off with a bang as the band takes a blast to the past, playing some of the greatest music anthems from old times. The band blends together effortlessly, led by the music director R.A Gil on the piano. The party doesn’t end there. Comedian Capone leads the night as the host with the most, even interacting with the audience and being a judge on the performers. If comedy had a face, it would have to be Capone.
And then the moment the world has been waiting for, the performers. From singing to dancing to comedy acts, the performers give their all to the awaiting audience. They rub on that famous tree stump (some more than others) for good luck and begin. Their performance goes one of two ways. A great round of applause or a great round of…”Get off the stage!” Not only can audience members show their approval (or disapproval) through applause, but through the Apollo’s free Amateur Night app as well. Showgoers can sign in and comment on their favorite acts right as their performing. Well known for the “yay or nay” mentality of the show, that’s what makes the performances so great. The audience decides which artists deserve their standing ovation and which get the boot. And if they do happen to get the boot, it’s done entertainingly, by the tap dancing talent C.P Lacey, as the hilarious Executioner.
At the end of the night, the audience gives the most applause to their favorite acts, and the top three go on to the Super Top Dog competition, to possibly win the prize of $10,000. So, if you’re ready for a night full of laughter, splendid music, and some of the best and worst performances, you’re ready for Amateur Night.
