This week our theme is INDIE/ALTERNATIVE, where we focused on a musician that does indie rock and visited a venue to see him perform that caters to that type of music and crowd. Doing music reviews for albums and EPs — EP stands for “extended play” if you didn’t know — is one of the key jobs for any music journalist, and I wanted to get you guys started with doing these regularly.
Our subject this time around is Henry Hall, a musician who’s had write-ups on NYLON and Paper Magazine and brings a sort-of comedic approach to alternative rock. I honestly think it’s influenced heavy by his “famous parents,” which I’m sure you guys have figured out by now are Seinfeld / Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus and former SNL cast member Brad Hall.
We reviewed his EP Question, Comments, Concerns in class before heading out to his Brooklyn show in Williamsburg/Bushwick bordering music venue Elsewhere.
Take a look below for pics of the show, which includes opening acts Mustardmind and my new favorite indie band UV Rays!
- I call this one “aésthetique”
- Brandon, your exuberant energy can’t be contained even in a photo!
- This pic proves that we always got each other — even if it’s through pouring rain and a never-ending 3-hour train detour on the L train LOL
- First up, Mustardmind! I thought they were really cool and were able to channel that awkward “opener” energy and make it work for them.
- …and also any band that offers free fortune cookies with custom messages during their set are good in my book!
- UV Rays were amazing! I love punk rock, so this was right up my alley.
- In case you were wondering, this talented drummer/singer’s name is Erica Warner — easily the standout! #WomensHistoryMonth
- Not sure if this was glass or plastic, but Adrien’s see-through guitar was freshhhh! He was also the guitarist/singer for UV Rays too..
- August, you can be my personal photographer any day kid!
