Transport yourself to small-town England where magical love affairs spring out of a failing factory and a father’s death. Enter a bubble where “Glitter, feathers, and a hot glue gun can make the world a pretty place.” Feast your eyes on the marvelous Lola (Billy Porter), a drag queen who inspires a shoemaker’s son, Charlie Price to produce for a new client. Allow the expert book by Harvey Fierstein, loveable tunes by Cyndi Lauper, and smooth direction and choreography by Jerry Mitchell to distort your priorities. For two shiny and sparkly hours, get sucked into a world where shoes really do mean life and death. Well, a factory’s life or death.
Stark Sands is the adorable Charlie, a young man who has just inherited the failing family factory. Leaving his fiancé in London he returns to try and save it. Aided by the irresistible Lauren (Annaleigh Ashford) he discovers it’s time to find a new buyer. After meeting Lola and her Angels he finds his niche: shoes with heels strong enough to support men! Lola signs on as shoe designer and they prepare to show in Milan, Italy.
While producing these “kinky boots” the glitz and glamour never ends! Laughter erupts through the audience as the larger than life Lola is an endless fountain of dramatic wisdom, informing clueless Charlie that burgundy and red are not synonymous and clearly demonstrating that “The Sex is in the Heel.” Drag queens in short shorts and rhinestoned bikinis flounce, cartwheel, and shimmy in their extreme stilettos. Songs ring through the audience with infectious vibrancy and spirit. All the complexity of what a shoe should be, why it has a heel, and why ‘red’ is so important is taught through song and dance. The utter over-the-top-ness of a musical the revolves around “kinky boots” uses just enough humor and character believability that it creates a magical space where ridiculousness doesn’t just happen, it’s embraced!
