Meeting Eva Yaa Asantewaa was a big opportunity for our Dance Teen Reviewers and Critics class. She has been writing about dance since 1976, and she writes for many famous publications such as Dance Magazine, The Village Voice, and The New York Times. We had the chance to read our work to her, hear what she thought and learn about the basics of writing a review.
I learned we should write what we truly believe in, no matter what other people think. I learned that as writers we are responsible for every word we write. Yaa Asantewaa pointed out that even a little mistake can make one’s writing sound casual or disrespectful; we need to be aware of this as we work.
Yaa Asantewaa is a nice person and I’m so glad that she was able to dedicate some time to us. I hope she can come to class again, I would like to ask her if there was anything that came in between her and her dream of becoming a dance writer. Many people have obstacles that they have to confront in order to for their dream come true, and I want to know if Eva had any.
I think that this session was really helpful.
