Located at 36-01 35th avenue in Astoria, The Museum of the Moving Image (MOMI) is none other than one of the most amazing museums in New York City. Though it is not on Museum Mile, the museum is very easy to get to with just a couple of stops on the Q,N, and R trains from Manhattan. When you first step foot in the building, you feel like you just took a step into the future. As you walk in, the first thing that captures your attention after the smiling faces of the staff members is the big, white, modern lobby. Providing a clean and safe environment to all guests, the Museum of the Moving Image is a family-friendly space.
At the museum you will find many interactive machines that have the ability to take you back in time. Well, not literally, but it will sure feel like you just experienced time travel. From optical illusions to video games, to film equipment to a station where you make your own flip book, the museum has it all.
Personally, I felt the museum’s exhibitions lacked organization. Going from the evolution of video games on the first floor among other modern day film exhibitions, to film making equipment on the second floor, to a Mad Men exhibit on the third floor did not seem to make sense; It was like watching a movie from the middle to the beginning to the end. I think a better setup would be as follows: modern film on the first floor, video games on the second floor, and equipment on the third floor. However, that’s just my personal opinion.
The experience of visiting the museum far outweighs the odd museum flow. Not only is MoMI a great attraction for film geeks, but it also is perfect for the technology-oriented crowd. At the museum, a person does not only see the evolution of film, but also the evolution of film technology and video games. From providing very informative tours, a clean and safe environment, and having a refreshingly reasonably sized crowd, this museum is a hidden treasure that surely has something for everyone.
