Not knowing what to expect, I sat anxiously waiting for my first Paul Taylor show in years. Being trained this year in the Taylor technique, I was excited to see the company itself in action. The diverse program, beginning with Speaking in Tongues and ending in Brandenburgs was sure to showcase the companies talent and range of style. The story of Speaking in Tongues is intriguing and dark (and can be found here: http://www.ptdc.org/repertoire/speaking-in-tongues-0). The piece is not the most upbeat; but it’s not the steps, it’s whats behind them that captivates the audience member for the duration of the show. The energy of the piece that Taylor envisioned was effectivley portrayed by the dancers. Some of the movement was so strong with emotion I felt for the characters, in my own body, just by watching. As intermission began, the audience slowly grew louder, everyone discussing their own take on what is considered to be one of the companies darkest pieces.
The second half of the show did a complete 360 as the joyus dancers in Brandenburgs graced the stage. The piece was such a wonderful way to end my Wednesday night as it was just so simply beautiful. There was no deep underlaying factors or intricate meaning. The work is simply pleasant to watch. The music and the dancers moved as one, celebrating life and all the good things in it. This company is a wonderful array of dancers, led by choreographic mastermind Paul Taylor. Taylor’s ability to create pieces of such diverse feelings makes him, after decades, still one of the best modern choreographers in the world. The company is able to tap into Taylor’s visions and portray his pieces as he envisions, making the company not only techinically strong but artistically developed. This program was a pleasure to watch and really made the audience leave with no other option than to walk out absolutely moved by Taylor’s works.
The Paul Taylor Company will be at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center through March 24th. Visit the High 5 website to purchase tickets!
