If nature came to an end then Kempinas’ Scarecrow would too. The sculpture found a fitting environment in Socrates Sculpture Park seeing that it was built to exist in sync with natures every move. At first glance your mind automatically flashes to high rise buildings and the world of shiny smartphones because of how obnoxious the stainless steel is. This is a primary material in the sculpture and the first thing your eye catches on. But when you walk under you realize that when the wind blows the Mylar ribbons do so as well. And when the sun makes its way over to smile generously down the beams are eager to return the amiability with a smile of its own.

Scarecrow stands in direct contrast with Pawel Althamer’s Queen Mother of Reality in how minimal and undemanding it is. Composed of very simple elements, Scarecrow allows for nature to become the art. Whereas the sculpture Queen Mother of Reality, located in the purlieu, exhibits bold colors and myriad materials, Scarecrow relies heavily on its surroundings. The beauty is not in the polished look but rather the paradoxical nature of the structure. Who would have known that steel could be so flexible?
