The Brooklyn Museum displays an extensive show of Jean Paul Gautier’s work. This breathtaking exhibition lasts until February 3rd and is undoubtedly worth the small price one must pay. The show thrills and enthralls by creating a space and feeling of energy. Each room tells a story of a different time period and effectively portrays Gautier’s message and style. Gautier has a genuine and blithe nature to him that many other high-end designers lack. His sincere disposition is made evident when you see a tiny paper cone bra adorning a darling, small teddy bear. Gautier sweetly crafted the bear’s bra at an early age illustrating his innate sense of fashion. The cone bra would later become a monumental image for pop culture.
His humor is continuously portrayed through his beautiful and bizarre designs worn by startlingly, but somewhat off-putting, interactive mannequins. The mannequins’ abilities to wink, talk and sing to the audience are realized through high-definition audiovisual projections. This eccentric way of showcasing his design is not only innovative and intriguing, but also amusing. When one gets past the eerie mannequins they are able to fully absorb the gorgeousness, personality and detail put into each garment. For example, in one of the rooms, a dress with tiger skin hanging off of it (made entirely out of beads) makes one appreciate the thought and time put into his exquisite designs. After exiting Gautier’s show I was left feeling satisfied, inspired and optimistic.
