Afterschool made a comeback, Sistar, Rainbow, MBLAQ, boyfriend, and many more, but which were the best? Here I’ll give you my top ten k-pop songs of Summer 2013. While choosing songs I took into account the rhythm, lyrics, and the singer’s ability to efficiently convey the message of the song. The music videos have no influence on my decisions. If you’re using this review as guide for songs to listen to, feel free to listen to songs not mentioned and see if they appeal to you. The songs are listed in no particular order.
“Smoky girl” has an amazing club beat and fun lyrics to sing along to. The song describes a girl who is somewhat unattainable. Like smoke, she vanishes before a relationship can develop.
2. “Trap” Henry ft. Taemin and Kyuhyun
If you love someone too strongly you can feel trapped by your own love for him or her. Love can be a strong, blinding emotion and it is clearly portrayed in Henry’s debut solo “Trap.”
Looking at only one person and wanting them to love you is a common theme in songs. However it’s never sounded this good. Sistar’s alluring voices in this song should make any guy want to love them.
BTS’s “No More Dream” is about following your passion regardless of what anyone says and if you don’t know what you want to do, figure it out and strive for it. Though it’s a rap song, it’s cute an catchy, and it’s very relatable for teenagers trying to reason why they go to school and what they want to do with their lives.
What better way to describe your first love than with a sensual beat and eight girls harmonizing? The slow pace of this song really helps to build up the emotions of longing and sorrow that Afterschool expresses in the lyrics and voices.
A lot of songs are about being heartbroken, getting revenge, or blindly falling in love, however Baek Ah Yeon takes the time to thank that special someone for coming into her life in “A Good Boy.” The song is sure to put you in good spirits and make you appreciate your love.
7. “Darling of All Hearts” Sunny Hill
Sunny Hill is known for being able to sing a good ballad and even a good party song from time to time. Another one of their amazing skills is making songs that are completely relatable. Being single while all your friends fall in love or being the one that only gets attention when the other person needs help is a feeling just about everyone at some point in their lives has felt. Sunny Hill lets you know you’re not alone in the fun song “Darling of All Hearts.”
8. “Female President” Girl’s Day
A rather feminist song, “Female President” tells girls to not worry and make the first move because there’s nothing women can’t do: even the president of South Korea is a woman. Girl’s Day sheds their cutesy imagine in a song to appeal to all the ladies just waiting around for the guy to make a move.
Getting over a breakup isn’t a speedy process, but the group B.A.P. seems to be handling it pretty well in “Coffee Shop.” The song talks about not getting sad or emotional while doing things that remind you of your ex, like going to an old hangout spot, when the memories haven’t all faded.
This song doesn’t have a usual k-pop feel to it, sounding more like American pop rock. Regardless though, it is a generally good song. “Ocean of Light,” is a metaphor, in my opinion representing the endless possibilities for achieving your dreams.
