It was a cloudy and rainy summer Saturday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  But that didn’t stop me from going to the Alexander McQueen: Celebrate and Create event just for teens. Celebrating the wonderful works of art of a very talented designer, Alexander McQueen, I was able to listen and learn more about what to expect in the exhibition and be able to appreciate his designs more.

The event began with special guest, Tavi, teen fashion blogger.  I was able to learn more about her and her famous blog, “Style Rookie.” Throughout the conversation, we were given the opportunity to ask questions to Tavi, and Costume Institute’s Shannon Bell Price. Questions like “What was your favorite design of the exhibition?”, to “What inspires you?”. The time came to thank Tavi and Costume Institute’s Shannon Bell Price, for taking their time in answering our questions. Thinking that the event was over, we were told that now it was time to go to the workshop in where we were  able to create out own pieces of art.

As I entered the room, I was blown away by the video that was being played in the screen. Showing all the wonderful designs of Alexander McQueen throughout his time, from the famous dress, Widows of Culloden, which was in the autumn/winter ’06-’07 runway to his one of his last designs “Jellyfish” Plato’s Atlantis, spring/summer 2010. I continued walking to the table full of many art materials, in which I thought to myself  “Where do I even begin??” so I just decided to grab anything that appeals to me: buttons, glitter pens, colorful fabric, and the many pretty papers that had cool designs on them. I decided to put in practice what I learned at the event and inspire myself.  I finally sat down and started my process in creating my own piece of art work, just like Alexander McQueen (although I know I will never be good as him).

In a city like New York, where there are so many events for teens, I want to be able to take advantage and explore what more there is out there and be able to let other teens like me know about it. I also want to state that anyone who likes fashion or just wants to have a wonderful time check out the exhibition Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty now open til August 7. Trust me it’s worth going.  You will be amazed.
