On December 6th, 2012 Bruno Mars released his second full-length studio album, Unorthodox Jukebox. The highly awaited album debuted at #2 on the Billboard Charts. When asked to describe Unorthodox Jukebox, Bruno Mars responded, “sensual.” Though the lyrics of some songs can get very, very, sensual, there are some songs with great meaning that completely worth taking a listen.

Track 1

“Young girls,” would be one the songs that contributes to the sensual feel of the album. To summarize the almost four minute long song, it’s about the promiscuous life Bruno lives as he chases around young girls.

Sample lyric: All these roads steer me wrong
// But I still drive them all night long, all night long”

Track 2

“Locked out of Heaven,” was the first song on the album released, with its infectious beats and racy lyrics it’s no wonder that it has secured a #1 spot on both iTunes top singles chart and Billboard’s top ten songs. If you want to know what this song is about, just read the sample line from the song.

Sample lyric: But swimming in your water is something spiritual // I’m born again every time you spend the night”

Track 3

“Gorilla,” according to an interview with MTV, was the first song Bruno Mars wrote for the album. He says, “…it really set the tone for the entire project…” and hence a gorilla is featured on the album cover. The song, full of profanity and more sexual lyrics, provides blatant reason as to why the album has a parental advisory.

Sample lyric: “You got your legs up in the sky with the devil in your eyes
// Let me hear you say you want it all”

Track 4

“Treasure,” separates from the sensual lyrics of the first three tracks and really focuses on a feel good song to tell a lady she’s beautiful and deserves to be treasured. The song has a fun R&B beat and helps show how versatile of a singer Bruno Mars can be.

Sample lyric: “I know that you don’t know it, but you’re fine, so fine
// Oh girl I’m gonna show you when you’re mine, oh mine”

Track 5

“Moonshine,” has an eloping couple kind of feel rather than the intense sensuality of the first three tracks. It is an escape song; you can escape into the story that the lyrics paint and the soothing intriguing rhythm.

Sample lyric: “You’re the best way I know to escape the extraordinary
// This world ain’t for you, and I know for damn sure this world ain’t for me”

Track 6

“When I Was Your Man,” is the tearjerker song of the album. It’s about realizing that you’ve done wrong in a relationship that you can never get back because it was your fault, the “one who got away,” story.

Sample lyric: “My pride, my ego, my needs and my selfish ways
// Caused a good strong woman like you to walk out my life”

Track 7

“Natalie,” is a gold digging woman, who Mars wants to get revenge on. Again there is profanity, but here it’s used to express the anger in the lyrics and understandably so because Natalie isn’t the sweetest of women.

Sample lyric: “Good God I must’ve been blind
// Cause she got me for everything, everything, everything, alright”

Track 8

“Show Me,” is the reggae, smooth talking, yet still promiscuous, song. It’s a song that grows on you with its onomatopoeia and rhyming and once again shows Mars’ versatility in song genres.

Sample lyric: “It’s getting freaky in this room room room
// Now let me hear you say you want that boom boom boom”

Track 9

“Money Make her Smile,” is a simple song about a woman who is money hungry. The lyrics itself describe the song well “It’s not complicated, so this wont take a while.” She is a woman willing to do whatever to get money and that’s all there is to it.

Sample lyric: “She’s a super freak
// You wouldn’t know it if you saw her outside these velvet walls”

Track 10

“If I Knew,” is the shortest and the last track of the album and it works well as a closing song to the album. It’s about erasing the past and trying to forgive and forget in order to move forward.

Sample lyric: “Lets leave the past behind us
// So that we can go where love will find us”

Overall Album Rating: 4.4 out of 5
