Absari 1Derrick Adams solo “ON” exhibition is brilliant “through large-scale, boldly colored mixed media collages, performance, sound pieces, and illuminated sculptures, ON continues Adams’ investigation of consumerism and the dramatization of black figures in entertainment and popular culture”. Runnin’ Things (2015) for example, is a collage that takes you back to the 1970s. The artwork is of a old television. Within it is a black man who looks like his on the run. There is a written description that reads “ All Aboard: The Underground Railroad” this creates a better understanding or understanding about Black History and captures the image of the journey some took to gain freedom. This artwork is full of color and some element of patterns. Derrick work portrayed stereotype but behind it was the appropriation and beauty of African culture. From bedding and clothing of his craft.I enjoyed it and would recommend it to others who appeal to African culture in a brilliant style. This work is pretty original because it takes the events in history and puts a spin on it by making it look like it’s inside a TV.
