Arts Partner: Oratorio Society of New York
The Society departs from its traditional concert format and presents a full evening of music for divided choruses. First, the women’s chorus takes center stage under the baton of David Rosenmeyer to present Berlioz’ Tristia: “La mort d’Ophélie” followed by “Sirènes,” from Debussy’s Nocturnes under the baton of Kent Tritle. After the intermission Kent Tritle leads the men’s chorus, joined by two soloists, to perform one of Sibelius’s greatest symphonic choral works, Kullervo, a 70-minute suite that follows the life of the tragic character featured in Finland’s national epic poem, Kalevala.
