How do you get from a cult musical about conjoined twins to a children’s musical about an ugly duckling?

It’s been 15 years since composer Henry Krieger and lyricist Bill Russell graced the stage with “Side Show,” a musical about the Hilton twins. Now they’re back on 42nd Street with “Lucky Duck,” which is made its New York premiere at the The New Victory Theater. It’s a family-friendly tale about an ugly duckling who wants to be a star, a handsome prince in search of a bride, and a big bad wolf trying to be good. But parents don’t be alarmed—there are plenty of things to keep the adults amused.

In this fractured fairy tale, Tim Scott as the wolf helps the three little pigs get low interest loans to rebuild their houses (“No straw this time!” he commands). Jenny Greenberry, who plays the ugly duck, tells him “I don’t give a cluck!” when he corners her in the woods. But then he hears her sing so sweetly that he decides to help make her famous. She has two lovely solos, “Average, Simple Mega Superstar” towards the beginning of the show and “Don’t Start Playing my Swan Song” towards the end of this compact 90-minute musical.

No fowl joke goes unmentioned. It starts by getting the audience on their feet with the chicken dance and continues with a delightfully choreographed fried egg dance and a modeling school called “The Chick Agency.” And of course, the ugly duckling ends up a beautiful swan.

It’s as corny as Kansas in August, but it’s done in such an adorable way that you can’t help but leave with a smile on your face.
