Artwork by: Tashawn D.

The theme Simplicity in Complexity takes as its starting point the philosophy of the fund which is inspired by the soroban, a Japanese abacus dating back to the 1600s that utilizes a simple system of rods and beads to perform mathematical processes. The students exhibited have interpreted the theme with imagination, vision, and humor. They use formal approaches, such as complex patterns, personal narratives, and abstractions to investigate the small pieces that make up the whole, like the abacus. The range of artwork displays the passion and persistence with which the young artists approach their creative practice.
