This month was the aptly named “It’s Right Behind You!” horror edition. Instead of going right for the classics, we featured recent movies from the last 5 years. While each had its own different source of terror and approach, they all fit into the larger history of the horror genre and its familiar tropes.

Here’s the lineup:

It FollowsThe deadly curse that keeps getting passed on.

The Cabin in the Woods The group that gets more than they bargained for in the remote destination.

The BabadookThe storybook monster comes to life

And the winner was…

After carefree teenager Jay sleeps with her new boyfriend, Hugh for the first time, she learns that she is the latest recipient of a fatal curse that is passed from victim to victim via sexual intercourse. Death, Jay learns, will creep inexorably toward her as either a friend or a stranger. Jay’s friends don’t believe her seemingly paranoid ravings, until they too begin to see the phantom assassins and band together to help her flee or defend herself.

FINAL RATING: 4 out of 8 slices (some good scares but not our new favorite)
