Who knew a pair of shoes could determine ones destiny? This spring Broadway presents Kinky Boots directed by Jerry Mitchell with music produced by Cyndi Lauper.

Stark Sands plays Charlie Price who is next in line to take over the shoe company Price and Sons. Ever since he was young boy his father set his future but he envisioned it differently. When he gets a call that his father has passed away he has to save his family’s business. Billy Porter stars as Lola who is a drag queen and enters Charlie’s life. Together they create a pair of dazzling shoes unlike any other to save the business.

The musical numbers provided lots of drama and the singers were astounding especially Annaleigh Ashford who plays Lauren, Charlie’s childhood friend who sings about her history with guys. She stole the spotlight and took the house down.

Kinky Boots presents its audience with laughter and a life lesson to remember. Charlie and Lola are real; the audience can connect with them. This play has many unique elements, not just the drag queens and the heels.

From beginning to end it made me wants to jump up in my seat and dance along. The drag queens were especially outstanding performing in sparkling dresses designed by Gregg Barnes and in those “Six Inch Heels of Sex.”

The choreographer Rusty Mowery, organized the dance brilliantly as the performers danced all over the stage, even on conveyor belts. The number towards the end was exceptionally entertaining where every cast member flaunted their kinky boots to dance the final number.

This lively, comical and atypical musical left me wanting to purchase those shoes and strut down the runway. Those heels make a statement and this musical does as well.
