Kinky Boots. The name is full of intrigue and raunch. I wasn’t sure just what I had gotten myself into, but from start to finish the show manages to have its audience’s backs straight and eyes glued to the stage. When Charlie Price is forced to leave his London abode to take over his failing family shoe factory, he finds himself working with Lola, an entertainer, to create a fabulous line of sexy boots to increase their sales. Despite the many differences between them, they learn that their lives are all too similar.

A dramatic comedy, Kinky Boots has its audience laughing, crying, and choking all within the same breath. Seeing your dream being cast aside because it interferes with your parents vision of life, is often touching for many, but Lola, played by Billy Porter shows us that you can be yourself now and acceptance will come later. One would think they were at Cirque du Soleil with all the flips, splits, and amazing dances the cast does. And while these queens may not have been women, they sure could’ve fooled me. Wearing bikinis, and 4 inch stilettos, this cast definitely puts on a show, men and women alike.

Known for her hit, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Cyndi Lauper just might have made 2,3, even 4 more hits with her thoughtful and appropriate music she wrote for Kinky Boots. Not only did the songs have great music, but touching lyrics that may have produced quite a few tears from the audience. I became so immersed with the show that when it was over I found myself wondering what happens next. For all the ladies, men, and those who haven’t decided yet, Kinky Boots teaches a valuable lesson: take people for what’s inside, not out.
