This month we explored the ways technology and the different platforms we are logged into are shaping our lives and future. Is our ever evolving technology & increased connectivity a recipe for success or disaster? We chose 3 films that tackled the question:

And the winner was…

The Circle
PG-13 | 1h 50min | 2017
Director: James Ponsoldt
Stars: Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, John Boyega

Here’s what the teen audience had to say…

FINAL RATING: 5 out of 8 slices

Every PaaM night, we ask our teens to give us their honest reviews of the winning movie. We then select voices that capture the range of opinions and critiques. Read what Perla & Sydney (First time PaaMers), Gabrielle (PaaM Regular) and Jack (Reigning PaaM Critic) thought about the pervasive tech in The Circle.

Choose three words to describe the movie.

Perla: Underwhelming, Influencing, Mind-opening
Sydney: Exposing, Dystopian, Privacy
Gabrielle: Interesting, Unrealistic, Highly optimistic
Jack: Open, Exposed, Dystopian

What was your favorite scene? Bonus: Why? **SPOILER ALERT!**

Perla: When Mae is in the bathroom with Annie because you could see her downfall.
Sydney: When Mae exposed the circle.
Gabrielle: When Mae is participating in Soul Search, this conveys how dangerous technology can be when it is over used.
Jack: When Mae exposed the founders, I liked that it was a twist, The watchers are now being watched.

Would you recommend this to a friend? Why or why not?

Perla: I wouldn’t recommend it because it still leaves a lot to be desired and the movie didn’t answer many questions.
Sydney: Yes, because it gives an opinion on the invasion of privacy, and tries to make people aware of how good or bad social media and the internet in general can be.
Gabrielle: Yes, this film can reveal the positive and negative effects that come with technology.
Jack: Yes! I would start so many debates and great conversations.
