It’s that time of year again… January was the DO OVER edition! We brought back 3 movies from some of the closest votes at PaaM this past year that didn’t make the cut and gave them a chance at redemption. Here were the contenders:

City of God from The Villains edition

One by one, the youths fall victim to backwoods zombies, but there is another factor at play. Garhay: REDUNDANT, OVERDONE, EXAGGERATED

Natalie: SELF AWARE, COMEDIC, MORBID

Mira: CONFUSING, STRATEGIC, FUNNY

Madison: CLEVER, A MOVIE-LOVER’S MOVIE, CLICHÉ-BUSTING

What was your favorite scene? Bonus: Why? **SPOILER ALERT!**

Garhay: When Dana was being beaten up by the monster while the people at the office were celebrating. This scene shows how unattached the people are and non sympathetic to the victims

Natalie: The scene where the 2 surviving characters are in the elevator seeing the different creatures they could have encountered. It mocked the predictability of horror movies in a really unique way.

Mira: I honestly really enjoyed when the merman came to attack the control man because the entire time he wanted to see one, so his wish was fulfilled. (When I say I enjoyed it I don’t mean that he died, I just mean the way in which he did so).

Madison: My favorite scene was where Marty and Dana realize that they are puppets in the elevator as they are surrounded by different horror movie monsters. This was my favorite because it is such a moment of enlightenment for the characters and such a “meta” moment for the audience.

Would you recommend this to a friend? Why or why not?

Garhay: No, I’d rather watch City of God with them.

Natalie: I’d recommend this to someone really familiar with the horror genre. Seeing horror movie tropes mocked made it more enjoyable, but someone who hasn’t seen those may not like the film.

Mira: I would recommend this to somebody that is really into movies because every scene seemed to refer to another. For instance, coming out of the water and laying on the docks, Dana had this titanic-esque vibe. This is the perfect movie to sit and binge eat with a friend if you’re willing to pick out all the allusions.

Madison: Yes! This movie is a perfect mix of horror (for those who love horror), science-fiction (for those who love sci-fi) and meta (for those who love movies)!
